A photo exhibition featuring photos on butterflies of Vietnam was set up by the SP Environment Club at the BizIT Library from 9 to 11 July 2008. The photos were taken by SP student, Ms Meisy Wong Sook Yean.
The exhibition was to showcase what SP has done and our commitment to the environment.
On 11 July 2008, the Chief Executive of ACCA, Mr Allen Blewitt, toured this exhibition during his visit to SP campus, as SP has once again won the “Best Environmental Report” at the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Singapore Environmental and Social Reporting Awards (SESRA).
The Library has put up a book display on nature/environment-related resources to support the exhibition.

Frankly speaking, I am not very interested in football. But when there is World Cup or Euro, I would be interested to find out who is the winner. How about you?
Back tracked to World Cup 2002, when Korea was playing in the semi-finals, were you same as me, standing in-front of the television supporting Korea? I supported Korea not because I adored them, but because they were the only team from Asia country. Imagine my disappointment when Korea was not able to clinch 3rd place in the World Cup 2002.
The champion of Euro 2004 was a black horse, Greece. Who will be the winner of Euro 2008? Which country do you support and who do you hope to win the championship? For me, I hope it will be Germany though I have no ideas who are the players, their skills levels and etc, I just support them.
Join me and the whole world and set your eyes at Austria and Switzerland, and let’s witness Euro 2008 championship!
Check out the Euro 2008 website for more information or our lib catalogue on football.

Recently, there was a discussion in the papers on whether Chinese is difficult for those who come from English-speaking backgrounds.
My personal take on this issue is that it is possible to learn Chinese reasonably well even if you come from a family that does not speak Chinese. I myself is an example. Both my parents could not speak, read or write Chinese as they were from Malaysia. We arrived at Singapore when I was seven.
I still remembered the first month in school, I was practically crying everyday over my Chinese homework as I could not understand what the teacher was saying and what had to be done. My parents were helpless and my mum would bring me to the grocery shop to ask for help.
Thankfully by chance, we found a good Chinese tutor who drilled me to memorise the different characters and practise the strokes. Along the way, she would inject some antedotes and background history when we come across comprehension passages or while going through the textbooks. My motivation then was just to do well in Chinese so as to avoid scoldings from my parents.
It was only in my Secondary School where I met two very good Chinese teachers who made me realised what a beautiful language it actually was. They took time to explain Chinese history and culture, relating it to what was taught then. They also explained to me how various Chinese proverbs and idioms came about. In a sense, they made the language lively and interesting.
In addition, most of my friends were from Chinese speaking backgrounds. Plus, I was interested in Chinese drama series and pop songs. Through all these mediums, my Chinese improved by leaps and bounds.
If you are interested to learn more about Chinese, check out our Library catalogue! Start exploring the beautiful language today!
